Les pronoms relatifs (= relative pronouns)

What pronouns do I already know ?

Je, tu, il … Personal Pronouns

Le, la, les, me, te, lui, nous … Object pronouns

I give him an apple.

Where do I find the pronouns ?

Je lui donne une pomme. (before the verb)

 

The relative pronouns :

Relative pronouns put in relation two simple sentences.

I like the apple. The apple is green.

I like the apple which (this is my relative pronoun) is green.

Relative pronouns in English: that, which, who, whom, whose, of which, of whom…

Relative pronouns in French: qui, que, dont, où…

 

QUI :

Qui is the relative pronoun that replaces a Subject.

Le bus passe devant chez moi. Le bus va à l’école.

The bus that goes to school goes past my house. = Le bus QUI passe devant chez moi va à l’école.

 

QUE :

Que is the relative pronoun that replaces a direct object.

Je prends le bus. Le bus va à l’école.

I take the bus that goes to school = Je prends le bus QUI va à l’ecole.

The bus that I take goes to school = Le bus QUE je prends va à l’école.

 

Examples:

A: Le garçon / name. = Le garçon s’appelle Michael.

B: Le garçon / to party (= aller a une boum). = Le garçon va à une boum.

A + B = The boy called/whose name is Michael is going to a party. = Le garcon qui s’appelle Michael va a une fete.

B + A = The boy who is going to the party is called Michael. = Le garcon qui va a la fete s’appelle Michael.

The jumper that I see is green. = Le sweatshirt que je vois est vert.

I read the book I received. = Je lis le livre que j’ai eu.

 

DONT = of which, whose, of whom

The book that I need. = Le livre dont j’ai besoin. (dont replaces an object introduced by « de »)

 

= where / when

The place where I go is called Paris. = L’endroit je vais s’appelle Paris.

They met the day we left Paris. = Ils se sont rencontrés le jour nous avons quitté Paris.

 

As well we can find the relative pronouns in expressions such as :

Je pense que / Je crois que / Je sais que …

I think that / I believe that / I know that …
